Arizona Unemployment Extension

The unemployment insurance program is administered through a federal state partnership.  This partnership is between the US Department of Labor and the Department of Economic Security.  SUTA is a state unemployment insurance tax collected by the DES unemployment insurance tax section.  The payment of unemployment insurance benefits comes from the SUTA payments.  This makes it possible for individuals that are eligible, to receive unemployment insurance benefits or an Arizona unemployment extension while they’re looking for new employment.

The Arizona unemployment extension is only for individuals who already have a regular insurance claim and are out of money because you received your last unemployment payment.  Originally, the extended unemployment compensation program provided up to 13 weeks of additional unemployment benefits if you used all your regular benefits and had a benefit year that ended after May 1, 2007.  The President authorized up to seven additional weeks of emergency/extended employment compensation on November 21, 2008.  This was for individuals who filed before and were eligible for a July extension.  These benefits were added to existing EUC claims.  New claims filed since November 21, 2008 includes these new benefits.  The Arizona unemployment extensions aren’t meant for those who have earned enough wages so that they can qualify for a regular claim.

There are four different groups affected by Arizona unemployment extension.  These include individuals who have never applied for EUC, individuals who applied and qualified and have used their entire EUC award, individuals who exhausted their original EUC award or the additional weeks that were added on November 24 after January 5.  If you don’t qualify for a new claim after your benefit year has ended, you need to file through the ARRA telephone system.  There’s a charge of 50 percent for any extended benefits paid by experienced rated and nonprofit reimbursement employers.  Also, it’s mandatory for governmental employers to pay the department for the whole amount of extended benefits paid.
